(Tucson, Arizona) The domestic partners of University of Arizona employees and and their children will get reduced tuition at the Tucson school.

The deal is part of a new policy announced this week by the administration but does not include the same benefits and insurance already offered to married couples.

Eight of the big 10 western universities, known as the Pac 10, offer domestic partner insurance.

The plan is available to all same-sex couples who are registered under Tucson's domestic partner law.

"Implementing this program will bring UA more in line with its peer institutions and local market competitors," said UA President Peter Likins in an email to all employees announcing the plan.

"By offering tuition reduction, the UA will be more capable of competing with employers that offer either healthcare coverage, tuition reduction, or some combination of both to employees’ domestic partners."

Gay and lesbian employees at the university have been fighting for health benefits for nearly a decade. They say the tuition plan is a step in the right direction, but only a small step.

The only other Pac 10 school not to offer domestic partner benefits is Arizona State.

Under the tuition program same-sex partners of university employees can take classes for $25 per semester, including mandatory fees. Their dependents also can attend at a 75 percent discounted tuition rate.
