Two Gay Men Shot In Brooklyn Park

(New York City) Police are warning gay men to be careful after two men were shot and robbed in an area of Prospect Park known for cruising.

The two men were engaged in sex when the gunman opened fire, hitting a 29-year old in the thigh and a 28 year old in the chest. The gunman then robbed the pair.

It is not the first time that gay men have been attacked in the park.

In 2000, at least five men were slashed or beaten by an attacker dressed in a black Ninja-like outfit. None of the victims were robbed and the attacker was never caught.

"Any place that gay people congregate is a hotbed for attacks," Basil Lucas, spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project told the Daily News. "People assume that these men are easy targets because they don't think they're going to report it."

The early morning shootings were the latest in a growing number of attacks on gays in Brooklyn. In the worst, Dwan Prince, a 32 year old Brooklyn man, was beaten unconscious this summer and remained in a coma for days after he was beaten, kicked and stomped on by three men who yelled homophobic epithets. Only one person has been charged in the attack a Brooklyn man was indicted on six counts of assault
