New Gay Dispute Breaks Out At N. Calif. High School

(Tracy, California) A high school at the center of allegations it failed to protect LGBT students from harassment and bullying is now under fire for refusing to inform students about the region's first gay-friendly prom.

The administration at West High has pulled ads by the school's Gay-Straight Alliance for the prom from a daily bulletin for students.

Although students have been working for months to organize the event the school says that it actually is being sponsored by Equality California, the state's largest LGBT civil rights group and does not qualify as a West High event.

"We're not going to let outside agencies in our bulletin," said principal Herman Calad.

While students acknowledge getting help from EQCA they say they are behind the prom and the school is discriminating against them for being gay.

"It's a West High School club putting on a West High School event," said Justin Daley, a senior at West High who is president of the school's Gay-Straight Alliance and also is director of the Equality California's San Joaquin County chapter.

So far, 40 students at the school have purchased tickets for the April 13 event, Daley said.

Last October the California Department of Education announced it would investigate allegations that the school district failed to protect LGBT students from harassment and bullying at West High. (story)

The Gay-Straight Alliance at West High School went to the state after it said the district had done little to address concerns about harassment.

The 'gay friendly' prom was aimed at giving LGBT students an opportunity to bring same-sex dates and do all of the things students do at traditional proms.
