Teacher Fired For Coming Out On Web

(Las Vegas, Nevada) A teacher at a Las Vegas Catholic high school who mentioned in his personal Web site that he is gay has been fired.

Jeff Crouse did not discuss his sexuality in class or with other teachers at Bishop Gorman High School. Nevertheless, when administrators discovered the posting on MySpace.com he was brought into the principal's office and fired.

On the Web site he said that he was gay and looking for "straight-acting single men." Proclaiming his sexuality, Crouse was told, is a violation of Church teaching.

Richard A. Facciolo, chancellor and superintendent of schools for the Las Vegas Diocese upheld the firing. Facciolo told the Las Vegas Sun that the Church expects teachers to serve as role models for students and to know, act and teach in accordance with church doctrine.

Faciolo would not say how the Web site posting came to the attention of Church officials.

Crouse has a doctorate in film and television studies from the University of Warwick in England. He was, according to the Sun, popular with students and was active in the school's Philosophy Society Club and head of Bishop Gorman's chapter of Amnesty International.

A former seminarian, Crouse, told the Sun he enjoyed teaching at Bishop Gorman because the Catholic culture at the school allowed him to develop his classes and to teach from a religious perspective.

He declined to tell the paper if he plans to fight his termination.

Earlier this year a Vatican directive ordered seminaries not to accept gay students but the prohibition did not apply to Catholic elementary or secondary schools.
