S.F. Supervisors Denounce Iranian Attacks On Gays

(San Francisco, California) San Francisco's Board of Supervisors has passed a resolution urging the United States Department of State to publicly condemn Iran's execution of two teenagers for allegedly having gay sex.

The measure is largely symbolic. Supervisors recently passed another resolution calling on Congress to repeal 'don't ask, don't tell, the military's ban on gays serving openly in the armed forces.

Mahmoud Asgari, 18, and Ayaz Marhoni, 19, were hanged in the city of Mashad on July 19.

Details of the trial and execution are mired in controversy with some civil rights groups arguing the teens were hanged because they were gay and others agreeing with government reports that they had raped a younger teen.

In an August 3 story, 365Gay.com Editor-At-Large Rex Wockner noted that the full story will likely never be known. (story)

Last week, gay activists protested against the treatment of gays in Iran in five European and American cities including San Francisco.

Gays in Iran say that two more young Iranian men have been sentenced to die on August 27 after having been convicted by a Sharia or Islamic court for alleged homosexual intercourse and "rape". The reports cannot be independently verified.

The resolution passed by the Supervisors says that "the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco hereby deplores the persecution and execution of all Iranians who are denied the due process of the law and are, or are perceived to be, of the LGBT community;" and, "urges the U.S. State Department and its European partners to issue a strong condemnation against the Islamic Republic of Iran for their national practice of civil rights abuses and executions of homosexuals, and demand the cessation of further executions and denial of due process of law.
