Ind. Girl Brings Gun, Pot to School

GARY, Ind. -- A 14-year-old girl came to middle school with a handgun, ammunition and six small bags of marijuana, police said.

The girl set off metal detectors and was arrested and charged with juvenile delinquency, said Gary police Detective Lt. Jack Arnold.

School Board President Jesse Morris said parents should not be alarmed because the security system worked.

"If the detectors would not have worked or if they weren't manned, she probably would have gotten inside the school with the gun and the drugs," he said. "That is scary. It's a safety issue, and I'm very concerned about this."

Morris suspects the multiple bags the girl brought could mean she was selling drugs for another dealer.

"Drug dealers like to send kids into the schools, because if an adult gets caught, especially close to a school, the penalties are more severe," Morris said.
