Oral Sex Linked To Mouth Cancer

(Stockholm) A study by Swedish researchers has found that certain types of mouth cancer are attributed to oral sex.

The researchers at the Malmo University Faculty of Odontology say that in almost all of the cancer cases the patients developed the disease after contracting human papilloma virus during oral sex.

The scientists also noted that the patients tended to be middle aged or older men, were smokers and drank alcohol.

The study compared 132 patients with mouth cancer with a control group of 320 healthy people.

The scientists found that 36 percent of the cancer patients were carriers of HPV while only one percent of the control group had the virus.

There are more than 2.5 million cases of human papilloma virus, or HPV for short, among men annually in the US according to the Gay Men's Health Crisis in New York City.

It is a common cause of death in men with HIV.

The anal infection rate in young gay men is highest. Infection occurs through skin-to-skin contact — including areas not covered by condoms.

Most infections are transient and are cleared by the immune system. Of the 40 or so types of HPV that infect the genital and anal regions, those that cause genital warts are deemed "low-risk" whereas those linked to cancer of the cervix or anus are termed "high risk" GMHC says.
