A student group on Tuesday formally asked the school board to add the words "sexual orientation" to the district's policy against harassing students because they say gay students are often targeted for bullying. The board took no action on the request. Board spokesperson Sherry Fair later said that officials have to be careful about naming specific groups. Earlier this year Oklahoma City's Library Commission came under fire from conservatives over children's books about gay families. In May, the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a resolution calling on public libraries to remove children's' books with references to gay characters or gay families. (story) A national study conducted for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, showed that 65% of all teens report that they have been verbally or physically harassed or assaulted during the past year. (story) The study said that the harassment came about because of the teens' perceived or actual appearance, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression, race/ethnicity, disability or religion. ©365Gay.com 2005 links
