(Fort Lauderdale, Florida) Police in Fort Lauderdale are hunting down gays. Not to arrest them, but to hire them.

The police department has begun an aggressive advertising campaign in the state's LGBT press hoping to find recruits for the force. It will also have a booth at Pridefest, Fort Lauderdale's gay pride celebration.

I wouldn't mind seeing more openly gay officers at the department,'' Police Detective Brice Brittenum told the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. "I think that would be great for the department and the community.''

One of the few openly gay officers on the force Brittenum was recently appointed the liaison to to the LGBT community.

The job is in addition to his duties on the robbery squad.

He told the paper that all police department have to represent the communities they serve.

"We hope to send a positive message to the community that we're not going to turn our backs on any group,'' Brittenum said, adding that there is also a liaison on staff to the Haitian community.

Fort Lauderdale, with its substantial gay community - especially in the tourist season - has seen remarkably few hate-crimes against gays and transsexuals said Brittenum. Just three since 2002.

"We're lucky enough to have a fairly tolerant community,'' he said. "Everybody's pretty comfortable with everybody else.''
