(Durham, North Carolina) A 23 year old has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2004 shooting, beating and drowning of a Franklinton, North Carolina gay man.

Twenty-three year-old Sean Ethan Owen was lured to Durham from his home after meeting Epps and two other men in a gay chat room.

Owen expected to engage in sex with the three, but the trio had gone to the chat site to find a gay man and rob him.

Owen was shot twice in the head, beaten and then dumped in the trunk of his own car. The three attackers drove to the Eno River where Owen was thrown into to drown.

During his trial Epps was described as the trigger man.

The jury took just over to hours to deliver a guilty verdict.

In sentencing Shelton Deangelo Epps Judge Michael Morgan called the slaying a "sickeningly opportunistic and atrocious," and slapped on another six- to eight-year prison term for kidnapping Owen on top of the life sentence.

Epps two accomplices were also sent to prison.

Matthew Lawrence Taylor, was convicted of first-degree murder last year and sentenced to life in prison without parole plus six to eight years for the kidnapping.

Derrick Arness Maiden Jr. agreed to a plea bargain in return for his testimony against the other two. Maiden was charged with second-degree murder and sentenced to almost 12 years in prison.
