(Washington) An angry DC Mayor Anthony Williams says that unless the pastor who used homophobic slurs in a recent sermon apologizes he will be removed from the the mayor's interfaith council.

In a Palm Sunday sermon Bishop Alfred Owens Jr., of Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church, said "It takes a real man to confess Jesus, not talking about no faggot or no sissy - I mean a real man."

The remarks infuriated the Districts LGBT community, already concerned about other homophobic outbursts from other Black church leaders.

Williams told reporters that he was "shocked, sad and disappointed" with Owens.

"I really have to condemn remarks like that whenever they are made against any group on the basis of sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity or anything else," Williams said.

Last summer Willie Wilson, pastor of Union Temple Baptist Church in Southeast Washington DC and national executive director of the Millions More Movement, warned his congregation that "Sisters making more money than brothers and it’s creating problems in families … that’s one of the reasons many of our women are becoming lesbians.” (story)

The five major candidates to replace Williams as mayor earlier this month denounced both Wilson and Owens and pledged to promote tolerance for gay men and lesbians in the city's black churches.

Williams is prevented running again by term limits.
