(San Diego, California) Three men pleaded not guilty during a brief court appearance Thursday to charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with attacks on 6 men leaving a gay pride festival on the weekend.

Both counts carry hate crime enhancements.

James Carroll, Lyonn Tatum, and Kenneth Lincoln were arrested this week.

Bail was set at $1 million for James Carroll and Tatum. Lincoln was ordered held in custody in lieu of $350,000 bail.

Both Carroll and Lincoln have criminal records. Lincoln was on parole in connection with another crime when he was arrested.

Prosecutor Oscar Garcia told Superior Court Judge David Szumowski that witnesses have said they heard Carroll and Tatum and Carroll talking about going out to rob people to get drug money on the night of the attacks and that the two left with a baseball bat and knife.

One of the victims remains in hospital with a fractured skull - the result of being hit with a bat. He may require reconstructive surgery.

Another suffered superficial stab wounds. That man and the other three victims were treated and released from hospital.

The men had just left the pride festival at Balboa Park when the assailants began taunting them with homophobic remarks. (story)
