movieguy Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 Braves Shortstop Furcal Arrested for DUI ATLANTA (AP) -- Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal was arrested early Friday on charges of driving under the influence, speeding and reckless driving, police said. It is the player's second DUI arrest. Furcal was booked into the Atlanta city jail following his arrest on Interstate 85 and remained in jail Friday afternoon, authorities said. It was not immediately clear if he took a blood-alcohol test. Furcal's family hasn't determined yet how to pay the $3,200 bond set by a judge, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gayle Middlebrook said. Furcal's next court appearance is Oct. 14. Cobb County officials told the jail Friday that he also violated the terms of his probation from a June 2000 drunken driving conviction, Middlebrook said. Furcal's 12-month probation sentence would have expired Oct. 29, Cobb County Solicitor General Barry Morgan said. Furcal previously was sentenced to a year's probation, a $500 fine and 40 hours of community service. His court appeals on the June 2000 arrest delayed the start of his probation until last year, Morgan said. In the 2000 case, Furcal registered a blood alcohol level of 0.11, above the legal Georgia limit of 0.08. A lawyer trying to nullify the underage drinking charge at the time revealed that Furcal was 22, not 19, at the time of his arrest. Furcal, the 2000 National League Rookie of the Year, was batting .287 this season. The Dominican Republic native had two hits and two stolen bases in the Braves' 9-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night. © 2004 The Associated Press.
