New Hampshire House Nixes Anti-Gay Amendment

(Concord, New Hampshire) The New Hampshire House delivered a crushing blow on Tuesday to supporters of an amendment to the state constitution that would ban same-sex marriage.

In a late afternoon vote lawmakers rejected the amendment 207-125.

Last month, a committee studying the proposal recommended the House reject it.

The Judiciary Committee voted 14-7 to recommend that the amendment not be adopted.

New Hampshire law already bans same-sex marriage, but opponents want to have the state Constitution declare that "a marriage between one man and one woman shall be the only legal union that shall be valid or recognized in the state."

They say that would keep the issue out of the courts.

Earlier this month conservative activists delivered seven-thousand letters to lawmakers urging them to vote for the amendment.
