"Bomb" of a car has Norfolk man worried

Tue September 14, 2004 11:35 PM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - A Norfolk man spent four hours holding a rusty piece of metal he feared was an unexploded World War Two bomb that would detonate if he let go -- only to be told he had been cradling part of an old car.

As police, fire and ambulance crews rushed to the workyard where David Page had dug up the device, the terrified 40-year-old spoke to an emergency operator on his mobile phone, newspapers said on Wednesday.

"The woman police operator kept saying it would be OK but I kept saying to her, 'You're not the one holding the bomb'," he said in the Daily Mail.

Page, a father of five, sobbed to the woman operator:

"I told her to tell my parents and the children that I loved them if anything went wrong."

The drama ended when army bomb disposal experts turned up and told him the "bomb" was actually part of the hydraulic suspension system from a Citroen.
