(Poulsbo, Washington) It's racking up award nominations in near record numbers but if residents of Poulsbo, Washington want to see "Brokeback Mountain" they'll have to go out of town.

Regal Cinemas suddenly took the film off the bill on Thursday, after it had heavily marketed the movie in the local media.

The Regal multiplex movie theater ran ads for "Brokeback Mountain" in Thursday's edition of the Kitsap Sun newspaper and was promoting pre-sale tickets at the theater.

But, late Thursday, posters at the theater disappeared, and further ads in the paper were cancelled.

Calls to the theater were referred to Regal's head office. A company spokesperson did not return calls by 365Gay.com on Friday.

The Knoxville, Tennessee-based Regal is one of the largest motion picture exhibitor in the world. The Company's theatre circuit, comprising Regal Cinemas, United Artists Theatres and Edwards Theatres operates 6,273 screens in 558 locations in 40 states.

"Brokeback Mountain" is playing at the company's theaters in other cities.

Poulsbo, with a population of 7,450, has a small LGBT community and it did not take long for word to spread that the film had disappeared.

"It’s a slap in the face," Marlena Marie told the Sun.

Karen Bolton said that she's tired of having to drive all the way to Seattle to see a movie featuring gay characters.

"[This is] "the last straw," she said.

The closest movie house showing "Brokeback Mountain" is the Bainbridge Cinemas on Bainbridge Island.
